We are going for the gold 🥇

We are going for the gold 🥇

We are SO excited to announce that we have made it to the final stage of a local competition in Guatemala called Kakaw Concurso which is about innovating and revitalizing the creative industry in Guatemala.

Read on to learn what the prize is and what our contribution will be.

The competition is a collaboration between the official government sponsored creative industry of Guatemala and the nation of Taiwan.

In the photo above from May 2021, we went to get an introduction to the competition and to meet some of the other incredible artisans and teams.

The prize is a significant $ amount for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category; Ceramic, Carpentry, and Textile.

To participate, we have had to answer many questions and share our goals and plans with the prize if we win. It's a very professional setup and we are already learning a lot and finding it very beneficial on many levels to participate.

We are represented by designer Diana (left) - daughter of founder, Don Jaime - and artisan Doña María (right) - head of our main artisan group.

They are currently co-creating our contribution for the competition with consults from senior designer Don Jaime.

Just look at all these colorful BIRDS from Santiago Atitlan.

We will make 3 sets of jewelry that all include our most popular and beautiful hand-embroidery from Guatemala; the Santiago Birds.

Each set will have a necklace, a pair of earrings, and a bracelet.

At this stage, we are matching up the embroidered birds so that the color palettes will all fit together in each jewelry set.

Of course, we will also add our signature ceramic beads to the necklace since this is what separates us from the other participants in the Ceramic category.

So we still need to pick the color of the beads based on the color of the beautiful birds. This is something that really takes an artist's eye; to be able to see the end result and the combination of all the elements of the piece.

We are simply in love with this textile and we can't wait to show you the result. Until then, feel free to check out our current selection of Santiago Birds right here:

We are going for the 1st place in our category and we hope you will wish us luck and send lots of good vibes our way!

Thanks for reading along. Take care.

Saludos desde Guatemala,

Los Colores family and artisans
